I agree with you on which type of shoe to wear when actually boating -- the leather topsiders just don't lace up as tightly as the sneaker/canvas topsiders.With all respect, let me venture a contrary opinion. Topsiders, by my jaundiced eye, are some of the most rank-ugly shoes I've ever seen. That I once had the deficit of judgment to actually wear them (albeit a quarter century ago), is a source of great embarrassment.
If you want to go the route of the boat shoe, I much prefer and recommend the canvas model.
