Spending 5 days in New York, including NYE - What to wear?

Quick question regarding clothing and shoes. I'm going to NY for a 5-day vacation, flying from L.A. I have no winter clothes, although I tend to stay warm when others are freezing. I have a camel-hair sport coat and a few cashmere and wool sweaters. I have a long light coat which I can wear on top of the SC. I have a couple of scarves as well. I only have thin leather soled shoes. Am I fine as it is or do I need to buy something in a hurry?

Also, please recommend the best discount stores I could visit during the trip.

I ive in LA too but you're going to need more than that! It's freezing out in NYC!

a parka, something along the lines of canada goose or moncler? its been unseasonably cold in nyc the past few weeks, and looks to remain that way.

You're here for five days. If you're here to club, spend your money on cabs, not a coat you'll have to check and wait in line for. If you're here to be a tourist, buy a ski jacket. If you're here to shop, tell us what your budget is.

I'm there mostly as a tourist... I'll try to walk as much as possible, probably take the train, maybe a cab from time to time. I plan on going to the Opera, the MET, MOMA, etc. Check out some restaurants and cafes. Haven't really planned beyond that. I think if I layer a sweater, a sport coat and a long overcoat, I'll be fine. I'm more worried about the shoes, as I have no winter shoes. Will I be able to survive in average leather soles?

If the predicted weather is 40/30's that's a joke and you should be fine assuming your wardrobe is not composed of shorts and tees. Just bring an umbrella and some comfortable shoes if your intention is to be a tourist.

Get yourself a proper overcoat and a pair of danite sole shoes. I would be worried less about precip than about the cold...been nasty lately and is supposed to continue to be so.

Been nasty everywhere, but buying new shoes and a new coat for a 5 day trip? Unless you have some future use as well, just be cold for a few days.

You'll be okay. If it starts raining and your shoes leak, buy new shoes. If it snows and there is a pond at every corner, buy some boots. They sell stuff here.

Zara had some really great knee-length wool overcoats (in the LA store) recently for under $200. They have a quilted lining (probably a generic version of thinsulate) and the detailing was such that they could be worn either with a suit or jeans.

As little love as the brand gets, something like this might do you well:
