Did anyone wtach the spelling bee on ABC last night? I enjoyed it and was thinking about having a spelling bee party. I can see spelling bees gainning popularity.

It's bizzare how spelling bees have somewhow become hip. I'll admit to being a fan.

what was up with all the german words?? and hawaiian.
i was bummed to hear that my boy Samir got out before the championship round, i was rooting for him!

I was totally blown away by all the foreign words - I don't think that either hechser (from the hebrew) or wermacht (from the german) should count as english words.

but boy, were those some geeky kids. I wonder how much time the finalists have spent, collectivly, stuck in their lockers?

"Chair"

"Can you use it in a sentence?"

"The word I'm asking you to spell is 'chair'"

"c-h-a-i-r-e, chair"

[for you South Park fans]

I don't want to sound like a perv, but did you miss the girl from North Carolina? Talk about a fish out of water, in the looks department. And she was in the final three to boot. She'll make spelling cool at her school.

Hilarioius. From 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (at least when we saw it) for a kid they pulled from the audience:

"Cow"
"Can I have the defintion please?"
"It's...a cow!?"
"Can you use it in a sentence?"
"Please spell 'cow'."

I was thinking about having a spelling bee at my new apartment. I was going to have food and drinks after we finish. Our words wouldn't be as hard as theirs, but still fun I bet. Is this a lame idea?

Ha... I mentioned the same thing while I was watching it, and had to remind myself that these are 14 year olds. We are perverts. Damn us...

I think that is a great idea. It would be a fun and unique party, likely more fun than a trivial pursuit party.

I didn't watch it. I was channeling surfing and the best thing I could find was spelling. I thought this is going to be even more than golf and turned the TV off and actually did something; ironically, I went and played Scrabble

Was the competition actually interesting? Learning new and wierd words interests me, but I can't imagine it was enthralling to watch them try and spell them.

I wonder how long this resurgence of "it's cool to be smart" will last?
