I don't swim anymore, but given the choice back then between speedos and 'jammers' (the tight shorts) I'd definitely choose the shorts. Anytime I mentioned my sport the first question asked was always , 'do you wear speedos?' (or colloquially - 'budgie smugglers', 'meat hangers' etc.). I think it would definitely help level the ratio between men and women in the sport.
