Imagine the litigation that would ensue if we did that in America? The frantic, hand-wringing ninnyism that would ensue the first time someone fell? Legislators spending hours/millions debating whether to outlaw it or not?

Sometimes I hate my profession and my country.

Yep. A really cool, long-standing tradition ruined because of one bad incident. Reminds me of:

  • The anthrax scare, where we spent (only in direct funds, mind you) over $50 billion dollars because five people died.
  • The paranoia over child molester vans, when the vast majority of childhood victims of sexual abuse were victimized by relatives/friends.
  • The fear over Halloween candy poison, when not a single person has ever died from it.
  • The weekly "thing that will kill your children" report from various news sources.
  • Constant public service announcements on the radio about catastrophic social issues like "angry texting", "buzzed driving", or "sixteen year olds sexting."

For all the cliches about socialist Europe, I'm glad stuff like this, the tomato wars, etc... still go on. I'd really like to see this pyramid festival in person sometime.

Yep. every Aggie remembers that. Most of us remember cut, and some remember stack. A lot of us were too drunk to remember the burning, though.

You forget: Ephedrine banned from supplements because an overly dehydrated baseball player had a stroke after practicing endless hours in a 100 degree climate and he was guzzling an excessive amount of pills. Cell phone use banned from gas stations because a microscopic spark could ignite the fumes. (Static electricity creates a bigger spark. Therefore, touching any metal part of the car while getting out should also be banned.) Etc. Edit: Our profession isnt so bad after all, we also create the hold harmless agreements for the participants to sign! ;-)

The teams do take certain precautions - crowding together to offer the fallers some protection, kind of like stage diving into an audience.

That's a cool video.

On the safety side: I figure that's not nearly as dangerous as being a spectator at most of the Euro rally races I've seen videos for.
