though unconfirmed, there have been several studies reported to show that soy in excess can actually raise estrogen levels in men. soy is another gov't pumped up bullshit crop like corn. and the term soy milk is ridiculous as I believe it was lewis black who said "tofu doesn't have ****".

The problem is that the TC was asking about which is better as a meal replacement. Whey should really only be used post workout as a quick source of protein (it is definitely the best post workout). It's pointless as a meal replacement because it only elevates nitrogen levels for about an hour.

I would recommend soy as a better meal replacement than whey because it is a slow digesting protein, so it will last until your next meal. I also don't buy the estrogen raising nonsense that surrounds soy. I have never seen a study that proves this claim, but I have seen ones that say that soy actually decreases the effects of estrogen absorption by blocking the estrogen receptors in the body. Of course, casein would really be the ideal protein for meal replacement because it elevates nitrogen levels for up to seven hours.

Does anyone know of a whey brand that does not have stevia or some other alternate sweetner. I would be fine with sugar etc but not so keen on stevia taste in my smoothies.

True Protein lets you choose the ingredients ("plain" is available as an option for everything) - decent tasting stuff.

Also, this unflavored whey has great reviews. (no 1st hand experience)

I've been following the Soy debate for years, and I still have not come to any conclusions.

I try to avoid Soy protein isolate and concentrate, but I do consume a little tempeh from time to time. Fermented Soy is broken down sufficiently to prevent the anti-nutrient/phytates worry from becoming a serious issue.

For regular strength exercises and building muscle.

Whey is decent, but it pales in comparison to hemp protein powder.

Hey, show me some whey protein that naturally contains not only every single amino acid including the 8 essential ones that the body can't produce on it's own, but the same ideal ratio of omega 6's and 3's and as much that's found in an equal amount of hemp protein and I'll change my mind. It's a fantastic plant based protein for those who don't want to get it from animal products.

Simply containing the amino acids doesn't make it a quality source of them. If there was 1mcg of leucine in 25g of hemp I wouldn't consider it a very good source.

I'd rather just take whey and fish oil tablets. Omega-9s aren't EFAs and Omega-6s are overabundant in the average diet anyway.

Besides, hemp protein powder has too many calories and way too much soluble fiber to be used as more than a minor supplement.

What are you talking about? 120 calories per serving, which is around 4 tablespoons of the kind I have is hardly "too many calories." LOL Omega 9's and 6's...LOL, what are you on about? I said it has the ideal ratio of 3's to 6's (1:3). And the protein quality is excellent. The fiber content is excellent and does a good job of stabilizing your blood sugar, and is pretty ideal as a regular supplement. Again, I have no idea what you're talking about. I'll take it in addition to whey, but hemp wins every time. It doesn't have the bloating side effects that whey does, or the nasty protein breath. No artificial sweeteners, flavors, or any other added crap. Just a nice, satisfying feeling afterwards.
