it was only a $20 umbrella. the bank was empty, there were 3 people that went out the door in the 5 minutes i was in there. the manager took my name incase someone decides to return it.
should i let this go as one of those 'welcome to new york city' lessons..? but then again how hard is it for the bank to watch the security tape and just call the person who took it, since all 3 of those people made a transaction?

The bank isn't going to waste their time reviewing security tape so you can recover a $20 umbrella. If someone robbed their bank, yes.

If someone jacked my umbrella, I'd deliver a quick a blow to the temple, man or woman, for the trespass.

Now you must go into another bank and walk out with someone else's umbrella. Consider it the redistribution of artifacts. It occurs in nature: seeds being excreted far from their origin. Reminds me of a story Jack Kerouac told me about going into a restaurant and heading straight to the coat racks and walking away with pockets stuffed full of other persons' personal effects, or with double or triple overcoats (triple tweeds?). Or was that Burroughs?

+1 This is your only chance at retribution.

Yes. The lesson is never leave your personal items unattended in NYC unless you aren't overly concerned about seeing them again.

Pssh. A bum tried stealing my painting when I was there in Nov. I snatched it back and walked away really fast. Luckily my friend showed up in time to let me in to her building.

Ha. He's lucky I didn't bum rush him. I've been working on that thing for almost 2 years. I'd KILL for it.

The bank might have been a bit more accomodating if it had been a $1K Briggs. That said, you may not have been as careless had it been a Briggs also.

You just said you ran away into a friend's building. Not quite the killer instinct.
