Hi, first post!

So, i've been making a serious effort to expand my wardrobe beyond jeans/t-shirts and the few ill-fitting suits i've had in my youth. In quest for a hopefully more respectable closet, i was given this suit as a gift.

Of course, being new to this (even after lurking around here and absorbing as much of your precious knowledge as i can) i'm really kind of clueless when it comes... well, everything! But especially to certain pairings beyond what i'm used to (plain, solid suits and solid shirts, no frills).

So, what i'm really looking for is what kind of shirt and tie combo would work best with this suit! Especially in regards to the vest, as i had been thinking of checked or mini-grid but wasn't sure if that would be too "busy". Maybe a knitted tie? Brownish shoes, or black? This is my first real exercise in branching out, fashion-wise, and i'm hoping it'll provide a little insight and confidence into future choices.

That vest is very risky and probably best left at home for most occasions. The suit is quite gimmicky as it is, so I'd stick to a plain sky blue or white shirt.

I agree with the gentlemen above regarding the vest and that you should skip that.
A plain light blue or white shirt is a safe bet, but I see no reason why something else besides a plain shirt wouldn't work.

Why is everyone so scared of the vest? It could do with an extra button though.

The suit and vest are quite busy so a plain shirt would be wise, though not one as dark as in the picture on the website.

I don't mind 3 piece suits, but I just don't like that particular vest.

Why is the suit (minus the vest) gimmicky?

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

While i personally like the vest, i admit that taking it out of the equation makes everything a lot simpler. Maybe i'll figure out a way to include it sometime! Or just leave the coat out once in a while, see how it goes.

Luckily, i already own some sky blue shirts so once i get the suit back from the tailor i'll give it a trial run and see how it looks.

What about shoes and a belt? Stick with black?

With gray you can do any of black, burgundy, or a brown (depending on the shade of brown versus your suit). Quite versatile.

:| Yet another reason why I'm embarrassed to admit that I bought some items from MW.

In the first pic it sure looks like the jacket and pants are a different shade of gray.

IN answer to the question, wear anything, its a grey suit; it goes with all traditional colors.

Thanks again, everyone! Probably worried overmuch about it, but i'm glad to see that (at least vest-less) my options are pretty open.

Appreciate all the comments! Even if i do love the vest!
