I have a solid midnight blue wool tie. I wear it with pretty much everything. I love the look. you can wear it with the most wild shirts, or white shirts, and pretty much any suit.

How about with a darker shirt, such as navy?

I don't particularly like dark shirts paired with light ties, but it depends on the shades.

I'm also interested in getting opinions on gray ties. I have a gray glen plaid tie, and I always hesitate to wear it with colors. If you want a gray, or black and/or white tie, do you need to make the rest of your outfit black and white?

I usually wear gray ties with white shirts, or even window black pane on white fabric shirt. My brother has a light gray shirt which he wears with a pink shirt. Looks fantastic. a pastel based combination.

Black/white and gray ties have the tendency to end up with dark color suits or white shirts to bring out the best for the tie it seems becoz of the contrasting effect.

Any kind of dark shirt. Navy, dark gray etc. Navy shirt is the best though.
