Sole guard (topy) just the tip and maybe the ball? Or another solution?

An age old topic...the topy debate. BUT, I am sure that selective topy-ing has not been discussed.

I for one hate it when I can start to see the toe of my shoe wearing, and the black edging start's to wear away to show more sole.

Is there any other solution than a rubber?

With that in mind, and preserving the look of the shoe, i thought it might be an idea to get a bit of rubber on the toe.

However, the ball of the foot also takes a pounding, so might also be worth putting a small circle there?

Barker (who you guys in the US may not know) are a decent shoe maker in Northampton, they offer a welted leather sole shoe, but with a rubber strip going straight down the middle...thoughts: http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/produc...electedFitID=0

Anyway like to get your opinion. For me a re-sole isn't the best idea unless done by the maker, I'm wearing Allen Edmunds and I live in London, that's hardly worth it.

Cheers

I don't know that I concur with that, there are cobblers who can do as good of a job as AE, particularly if you don't want the whole shoe refurbished, and just want a new sole. But I would make sure you trust the person you choose.

And AE isn't so expensive that a good cobbler will destroy the shoe, just insist on a complete resole.

The rubber strip down the middle could help prevent ball of foot wear, assuming it is replacable, if I were installing that strip I would just glue it on with Barge cement and beat it in place, which I suppose you could test by getting some rubber and a bottle of barge and having at it. But will it actually prevent wear at the tip? Or are you a toe scuff type of guy?

In the mean time get a bottle of sole edging black, http://www.shoecaresupplies.com/Shoe...e-dressing.htm and retreat that scuffed tip so it isn't off color.
