Soft/medium hold recommendation for long wavy/straight asian hair?

I've had short hair (< 2" on top) for most of the past decade, but for the past year, I've been growing out the top. It's probably at about 5" right now. The hair on top isn't super straight. It's probably either wavy or somewhere between wavy and straight.

I've never really used hair products before, other than trying gel a few times when I was a teen (I'm now almost 30), and try out the American Crew Firm Hold Grooming Cream and suavecito Firme hold a few times the past year. I don't like these two creams. It "hardens" (not sure if that's the right term?) my hair. I want to be able to run my fingers through it and have it remain soft but formable.

Should I go for a firm or medium hold?

Does anyone have recommendations on actual products to try?

If you want your hair to remain soft and formable while still maintaining some control and hold, I recommend using a medium hold hair product. Medium hold products strike a balance between providing structure to your hair and allowing it to remain flexible and touchable. Given that your hair is currently around 5" and has some waviness to it, a medium hold product will likely work better for you than a firm hold one. Firm hold products tend to provide a stronger grip and can make your hair feel stiff or hard, which may not be the texture you're looking for. Consider trying out a medium hold styling product such as a styling cream, pomade, or a texturizing paste. These products will help you achieve a natural look with some hold and control, allowing you to run your fingers through your hair while maintaining a soft and manageable texture. Remember that different products from different brands may have varying levels of hold and consistency, so it's a good idea to experiment with a few until you find one that suits your hair type and desired style. You can also consult with a hairstylist for personalized recommendations based on your hair's specific characteristics.
