Guys, thanks very much for bearing with me and my newbie questions. ;-)

I often read that socks should match one's pants color. But I generally have always just worn dark socks, blue or black.

What socks are appropriate with khaki colored chinos?

Thanks!

I wear khaki-colored socks with dress pants and argyle or some other pattern with casual pants.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious - khaki colored socks are appropriate for khaki colored chinos. Once you're comfortable with matching socks to trousers and exploring color a bit with your shirt/tie/pocket square, you may want to experiment with sock colors that are not the same as your pants color. If you need some additional inspiration, colored socks are one of Will's great loves. http://asuitablewardrobe.dynend.com/...ax-results=100

Generally, I'd say stick with the rule* that socks match the pants in colour, but a shade darker if you don't have or want an exact match.

* after a while, you will gain the confidence to break this 'rule' with aplomb.

Time to get a bit more adventurous...match your socks with anything else you are wearing but definately not your trousers. It is time to break away from the norm. Go bright colors and rock your socks! In these challenging times now is the time to get out there! match your socks with your tie, your shirt or your chief....mathc them with anything but your pants!!!

If you need to ask the question, your socks should match your pants.

Thank you!! That's been the American way of thinking for far too long now. I either coordinate it with a piece in my outfit or mostly my shoes. I think it looks better when coordinating to the shoe

Socks are the part of my wardrobe that I don't give much thought about matching. Maybe I'll match one of the colors to something else I'm wearing. I usually wear whichever pair catches my eye at the time. Since most all my socks are Nagranis and the more colorful Talbotts I rarely ever wear plain socks. I say, just have fun with your socks.

I try to have fun with socks execpt when I am wearing black pants and shoes.
With Khakis I like to wear striped or argyle socks where the dominant color is tan or brown and the minor color/colors matches something else like the shirt or tie (if I wear one). I've taken an affinity to Paul Smith striped socks recently and they had some pop.

Khaki socks + khaki pants = sartorial death by khaki.

I like socks to contrast with pants, while complementing some other color in your outfit. I find that dark blue, dark brown, and dark red socks are the easiest to wear. Since I almost always wear a blue shirt, dark blue socks almost always work.

Hardy Amies was always pretty stict about this - your socks should be a continution of your trousers (as well as your pocket handkerchief should match your shirt not your tie, or else you'll be "affected") etc. etc.

I find matching socks to your shirt - and occasionally to your tie - can be a good look, as long as you don't overdo it. Today I've matched my lavender shirt to a pair of lavender socks and i think this works largely because the colour I'm matching is a pastel shade and it looks good on my skin anyway. I've even received a few compliments so I guess it doesn't look to 'try hard'.

Were I to try it with flouro pink the effect might be a bit more bad 80s music video rather than well coordinated gent! So I'd say its not the matching itself that looks good/bad but the appropriateness of the colours you're using. Perhaps this is stating the obvious?
