A soccer team's mascot, an owl, was hit by a pass in mid-air and knocked to the ground. A member of the opposing team then kicked it off the field and it died.

"I was not trying to hurt the owl. I did it to see if it would fly."

I don't know whether to laugh or condemn the guy. Poor, poor owl.

For a second I thought it was like a dude in a big owl costume.

Maybe next time a live animal won't be used as a mascot.

It wasn't actually a tame animal used as a mascot. As I understand it, the owl lived around there, was wild, and was basically considered to be a mascot.

I think the soccer ball may have done most of the damage. It looked to me more as if the guy just trying to shoo it off the field than inflict fatal harm on the luckless owl.

On second thought, what kind of marsupialed owl hangs out on a soccer field in broad daylight with a game in progress? We may have seen Darwinian natural selection at work!
