City has never won the league before. Wouldn't that be a pretty big upset?

Anyway, the difference between La Liga and the PL - and this is coming from someone who does like La Liga - isn't the results at the end of the league. It's about individual games, and an overall gulf in quality between teams. On their day, any of the PL teams could have a go and beat United, Chelsea or City. La Liga teams have a bad tendency to just roll over and take it up the ass when they play Barca and Real. PL teams don't do that. They fight tooth and nail.

city winning now would not be a big upset, it's what they spent bazillions on to import a million talented starting XIs for. already have a trophy under their belt

so you mean like racing santander making madrid look impotent or valencia scoring vs barca and maintaining their unbeaten streak :p

(yes i realize is 3 and 5 weeks in...)

if you consider the number of different winners, i believe la liga comes out on top over the past decade or decade and half. also, if you look at point spreads between 1-4, earlier in the decade la liga was much closer compared to the EPL whereas now it has been the reverse. these are cyclical natures of the two leagues

I like that sort of thing because there is a lot going on that I miss. Why? 22 players are constantly moving and I cant see everything simultaneously. Also some people understand other elements of the game better than I do, so there is always something for me to learn.

DL, you have enough VCRs repaired to make that kind of video yourself ! then again, I am usually over-stimulated by strong coffee while watching games so my eyes flicker all over the place .......
Check this (made by your current manager for his former boss back in the day) http://www.bragafut.com/artigos/art18.pdf

Now, since we're on the topic, this is an excellent opportunity to use the charts I made before :D

    # of EPL winners vs LaLiga winners: if you go back to 2000 it includes Deportivo. If you go back to 1996 it includes Atletico Madrid as well so 5 teams in 15 years. EPL going back to 96, 3 teams.

    Here are some standings:

    05-06
    06-07
    07-08
    08-09

    09-10
So even in the top four looking at past few years, you can't claim one league is "less competitive" than another. There are cycles of dominance in both. Sure, Barca/Madrid dominated last 3 years, but look before that and the top four were closer in La Liga than EPL. I didn't bother renaming the legend but top is EPL bottom is Liga

Notice how much closer La Liga was in 05-07 and how there are 7 different teams as opposed to 5 teams in the top 4. I could have wasted more time doing it for the entire league but I didn't.

You're both right and wrong. Not going to get into this argument because it's a stupid as Mac vs PC. I'll enjoy both, thank you very much. Also this forum is horrible on an iPhone.

Also I'm stoked to see Valencia doing so well - Emery's playing two left backs vs Barcelona was brilliant and exposed Guardiola's lack of tactical nous. I'm also enjoying the mini implosion of Real Madrid, and Atleti scoring buckets.

If you're offended at being called scum I recommend you never actually go to Elland Road (not that the tickets are easy to get for people who have never been to a game). You're clearly not from Manchester if you don't realise Leeds and scum fans hate each other with a passion.

If you think scoring three goals against one of the worst defences in the Second Division is good you are a very very sad individual.

Determining which league is better comes down to how many teams you think matter enough to count towards the league's stature. I'd say something like this:

Top 1- Big Advantage La Liga
    Top 2- Advantage La Liga
    Top 5- Slight Advantage EPL
    Top 10- Advantage La Liga
    Top 20- Slight Advantage EPL

For me, the quality of football is much much higher in Spain, but it is a two club league whereas here its a three club league. English football is completely sterile especially in the top flight so I'd much rather be a fan of a La Liga team than an English First Division team.

Meh, it's hard to say which is better 'quality' because you'd have to define that as well. Fouls are called a lot more often in Spain - players have more time on the ball and more space in attacking, so retaining possession is easier, passing is easier, and shooting is easier. David Silva can create goals out of thin air at a pace beyond what is required in Spain. To me that's more special than Fabregas scoring loads because he has way more time and space than he did in the PL.

I'd rather watch a match between two top 10 La Liga teams than say, Wolves vs. Stoke City, but I'd watch Liverpool, City, Chelsea, United vs. anybody and be much more entertained than watching Barca roll over whoever drew the short stick on any given weekend in Spain. I would hardly call English football 'sterile.' Most games are box-to-box attack and counter attack and to me that's exciting.

    Explain.

I don't agree. I watch a lot of PL games and enjoy the pace and quality of play. fwiw I would agree with this statement regarding the English national team -- it is a deadly bore and sterile to the bone. Forever underachieving.

I mean the atmospheres are sterile.

Edit: I guess most of the players really couldn't care less either but that's probably the same in La Liga.

I'd watch Wolves vs Stoke City if Leeds weren't playing because its a local derby and should be interesting.

i'll say that serie a is the best league, theres never a huge gap in points between teams and its entertaining to watch inter, roma, juve, palermo, napoli, milan, udinese, fiorentina etc.

I really wanted falcao to go to inter/chelsea, im still a fan of atletico and without a doubt they are now title contenders. falcao's scored 5 (6 if you count a perfectly legal goal that was called off) in 2 games plus the game winner in the europa league match, he is the best striker in the world.

Yes I'm from Manchester. And no I don't 'hate with a passion' Leeds fans. Or Liverpool fans. Or City fans. I have friends who support those teams. Why the fuck would I hate an individual based on a sports team they support? Unlike yourself.. you sad, pathetic idiot.

And according to you I'm supposed to hate Leeds fans with a passion, but gloating about the 3-0 to a Leeds fan makes me a 'sad indivdual'. That's some retarded logic you have there.

(I've been to Elland Road actually, albeit not during a game. Worked on the film 'The Damned United'. Met some decent Leeds fans too, who clearly had way more class than you my friend).
