Until now he's been used mostly as a sub to bring some action when the strikers are having trouble getting through the defense of the opponent (like you said: to open up the field), and when "the win is already in the pocket". Competition is strong in the offence (Kuijt, Robben, Affelay) and he hasn't played consistent enough to get in the starting line-up.

Listening to the last game on the radio before I move to Russia today. Ipswich away at £34 a ticket didn't seem so attractive tbh.

I saw that. Really nuts goal - we almost never see stuff like that in the Prem.

Mata looks like an excellent pickup for Chelsea, although it is hard to be certain based on only 30 minutes of play. He was distributing the ball like he had played on the team for years and creating opportunities for other players who probably haven't received a decent pass in months. He served Torres the first decent cross of the game, which Torres put on target (unfortunately it was at the keeper). Then he banged in a goal at the end.

I assume that teams will adapt by trying to beat on him physically, since he is on the smaller side. I am not sure anything else would work.

Lukaku was only on for about 15-20 minutes but he looked good as well. He does look like a young Drogba, as they say. Very strong.

Drogba's injury was sickening. I hope he is okay.

Looks like it is my job to bump this thread on days that Arsenal does not play :)

Arsenal need to at least get a point at OT tomorrow, can we at least agree on that? I would like to see them win but it seems like a tall order. Gunners are on the verge of getting only one point out of their first 3 games.

I don't think they can do it - ManU ripped Tottenham last week, and primarily with only a youth squad. I don't think Arsenal in its current state will be able to take anything away from that game.

Except maybe more calls for Wegner's head.

    And a match related post:

Liverpool looked pretty sharp today against Bolton. The finishing was a bit off in the first half such as when Suarez had a clear path and chipped it over the net. They created so many chances. Adam played some excellent long balls. The back-pass to the goalie for Bolton that wasn't called was a bit of a bummer as I would have liked to see Suarez get in on the scoring today with a PK. I wish they'd have kept Bolton from scoring, but the game was very encouraging. Top of the table :D

Quite simply I think it's the best performance Liverpool has had as a team since Benitez left. The passing and movement was better than what anyone could have predicted or asked for. If we can keep this up, there's no question we'll be right up there fighting for the CL spots.

Adam & Downing looked really good buys.. Kenny has transformed them.

Huh? Save for the last game, Adam has underperformed magnificently compared to last season at Blackpool

This was a European match. Brilliant goal. This, for me, is what football makes such a great sport. Skills over strength.
