I believe Arsenal are the odds on favorite to come in second now. City is in utter dissaray and the rumors about Mourino will be very destructive to the last of City's fortitude. Balotelli and Tevez??? SAF booted one and never would have brooked the other.

A team should be judged by an entire season, especially one of Europe's largest clubs, and Arsenal were as poor as they come for the first couple of months. That cant be forgotten. And they don't have a top 4 place yet. I would consider their performance over this season average or poor. If we were to overlay Arsenal's season on Newcastle or Villa then yes, that would be impressive. Having your manager yelled at to spend some money, not so much.

i would add to this that Arsenal have been getting 3rd or 4th for better half of a decade now, this is par for course, not something spectacular. the start of the season was a blip and showed the stupidity of the club/manager/directors during the summer transfer period -- throwing together a hodge-podge team on the last night of the window with panic signings doesn't really let a team make good use of the pre-season and really precludes things like gelling as a unit. add to that injuries that go with having one of the worst medical staff of a "big" euro club and you get what they started with. not surprising, nor is finishing above spurs. it's just not an accomplishment but most arsenal fans will keep their heads deep in the sand thinking this is another glorious master-stroke by wenger to save the day :sarcasm:

It could be very close for second. Of course, Arsenal can still theoretically win :)

Another 2 points lost, and barca keeps on winning. They gotta stop this, now. And they MUST beat barca on their next la liga match, ´cause a win from them would put them only one point away.

so much flopping by madrid, ronaldo ozil pepe di maria take your pick

seeing arbeloa telling pepe to get up and get on with it was hilarious he even kicked out at his own teammate what sociopath

regardless, this was still a thrilling 0-0 affair, so many chances for both sides thrown away, karim pulling an arsenal missing from a yard out, and dimaria could have won it at the death if he knew how to hit with his right foot...

when is the last time atletico won the madrid derby ? they usually collapse even before the first whistle regardless of form, psychological barriers and all.

They have made quite a comeback from the first couple of months and it takes a lot of skill to bring back confidence from their results and performances. Arsenal usually suffer a lot of injuries as well, having lost a couple of key players this was always going to be a tough season. If he spends some money on a keeper, keep van Persie and stay injury free they will win the league next season IMO.

Coming in the top four every year without spending hundreds of millions of pounds a season is some achievement.

Not a snowball's chance in hell. They have no depth up top and their defense is decidedly average. Walcott/Gervinho/Arshavin are all dreadfully hit and miss.

Ben Arfa just had a beautiful run for Newcastle. Newcastle would draw even with Tottenham if they don't get another goal against Norwich.

every team suffers injuries, van persie was healthy all season and sczcny is probably the only signing to have really come good of late. this is not an excuse, this is the same repetitive nonsense wenger and his supporters spout off each year. consider the 8-2 loss to united, yeah arsenal had a handful of injuries, but united also had only one of their normal back four along with 4 other youngsters, essentially both sides were without 5 regulars and united had to use new signings just like arsenal. excuses don't fly anymore, neither does replaying the whole"young kids" + "potential" line ...

not really meaningful considering that since 2003 Arsenal have been the 6th highest spenders [gross] in the league. only spurs have spent more without seeing any returns in terms of improvement/trophies but that's because they are spurs...

what does that have to do with the discussion ? his claim was that arsenal don't spend that much which isn't really true. they would probably be 4th highest spenders too if you discount recent influx of sugar daddies. of course, arsenal have spent net $0 (give or take) since 2006/7 season which isn't saying much except that they are really just a selling club at this point and not a good one at that.
