well my attempts to go dry have been foiled by my lying cheating (ex) ho bag gf.

all things considered, I am doing really well. I'm drinking a little but have not dove over that 2 beer mark on any occasion.

I've been drying out long enough that the constant urge to open a beer is finally dying,

but now it brings up a new scenario that I really hadn't anticipated... first dates and not drinking. Advice???!

I don't drink at all because alcoholism is rampant in my family. there is a strong genetic component to it (as with other addictions).

All my life I've been the "designated driver/designated don't let my female friend get raped/designated don't let my friends get into a fight with drunken marines" guy.

I do see the appeal of it though, because some people are just total *****, but 3-4 drinks in them they are actually nice and cool people. Its sad but true.

I have a weird admiration for "functional alcoholics", those guys who actually get wasted then still hold a good job and stable family.

But its honestly better for your body to be totally free of alcohol if you're addicted to it/suffer from alcoholism.

Its physiologically better to be an asshole and physically clear of regular alcohol poisoning.. maybe just work on the asshole/addiction part with a psychiatrist/psychologist/group (AA, ect).

I am not "sober" but I have cut my alcohol intake down significantly. I have a lot of alcoholics in my family, so I have always been somewhat wary of going down that path. In college I saw myself spiraling toward something that would not be good for me. Started drinking way too much, and definitely developed some nasty depression and anxiety problems.

I stopped drinking except for many a glass of wine when I take a woman out. My life has become a lot better because of it. I feel a lot healthier, I have more energy, I can focus more. I truly recommend it. The only thing that irritates me is when you do go out, people are constantly asking why you are not having a drink as if there is something wrong with that . . .

Agreed. Saw what it would do really early on and decided to never touch the stuff. Mid-twenties now and still haven't ever indulged.
