Compusa - out
Tweeter - out
Circuit City - out
Suppose I need a large screen computer monitor, but don't feel like ordering one via net.
Or I need a wireless keyboard that I'd like to test out prior to purchase.
Or take a Pio Elite or Sony XBR for a spin.
It is not as if Boston wasn't a retail Dullsville prior to all these chains going belly up

no Best Buy?

Circuit city was ghetto. CompUSA sucked too.

costco would be preferable to both.

Due to the economy being in the shythouse BB will be going really, really easy on their high-end stock this year.
Select zipcodes may get 1-2 pieces of expensive product, but that would be that.
As far as Costco, they hardly ever had anything on their electronics end that I'd consider putting money into.
For a brief period they'd offer 60" Pio Elite plasmas @ ridicilous discounts which lasted until Pio USA strangled the whole thing.

But Circuit City always had crap.

Some of the Best Buys have Magnolia Hi Fi...admittedly, I'm not into high end AV right now...but I would think what you would be looking for would be in the speciality shops, not mega-retailers that went out of biz.

This thread actually brings up a good point: will the sluggish economy affect high-end retailers in the same fashion mass-merchandisers have been hit?

I think the verdict is out on this and the answer is a resounding yes.

in terms of brick and mortar, Best Buy just destroyed everyone

many people also buy electronics at Wal-Mart and Target

online, Amazon is king

people in California still frequent Fry's Electronics

To me, I've had too much bad service and poor employee appearance and experience at Circuit City. It made me think that they would not treat their warehouse stock with care for some reason.

Best Buy, while not helpful that much, was at least friendly and presentable whenever I went in there. They seemed to have better hiring practices.

Granted, what CC did last year where they cut people to save money, then rehired new employees to replace them, I can't say I won't miss them.

Big box retailers tend to hire from the pool of local stoners anyway.
Besides, it's not as though I go in hoping to get some great technical advise from these morons

There was a time when Circuit City did, in fact, carry quality merchandise.
I once had a high-end Clifford alarm system installed there (took the whole freaking day) @ a cost of $700. Back when a pack of Marlboro was going for buck and a quarter.
