Last week I found these really nice Cole Haan shoes at a discount store. Only pair left and marked down from $400 to $200. Seemed to be a really nice pair of shoes.

I didn't buy them right away. Instead I went to the Cole Haan store to see what else they had.

Now this is the part that puzzles me. The shoes at the Cole Haan store seemed to be alot cheaper but also alot less quality. I looked over every shoe in that store trying to find one that matched the quality of the pair I found in the back of a bargan store.

So I am assuming that they just really dropped the quality of their shoes???

There are two distinct lines of Cole Haan shoes. Cole Haan Collection, which are made primarily in Italy but from time to time, the UK as well, are pretty decent shoes for the price.

The Cole Haan you see in mainstream department stores like Dillards, Macys, and Belk are decidedly inferior, less expensive, and made in India or Mexico.

For what it's worth, my feel is that the quality of the shoes in the Cole Haan stores has gone down in the last year, based on my visit this past weekend. The full price shoes ($195) did not seem as nice as their counter-parts about a year or two ago.

But the top end shoes that you found are nice. And for those that don't know, Nike owns Cole Haan, or maybe it's the other way around. That's why the "nike air" designs exist in the Cole Haan lines.

I have a pair of brown suede Cole Haan chukkas that I love. High-maintenance, though.
