I bought a J. Crew jacket made of the Millerain Oilcloth. It smells, not bad, but like overpowering, like Linseed oil. What can I do to mitigate the smell of the oil cloth.

This link is interesting. I don't know if it will have your answers or not. http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=37489 The link discusses a process involving linseed oil. I am sure you are aware that linseed oil is extremely flammable. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-linseed-oil.htm Rags or fabrics soaked in this oil can spontaneously combust if they are not properly stored. I don't know if that link I posted above takes that danger into consideration, but it is a danger that should be considered.

I always thought that was part of the charm of owning an oil treated garment.

Oil cloth garments are not soaked in linseed oil. They are treated with a paraffin wax compound. If you want the smell to diminish then wear the coat and break it in.

I've several Barbours. One stuffs the pockets with lavender sachets sourced from www.belleprovence.com and zips 'em up in garment bags. Diminishes the original scent, in time, and reduces the rancidity of toting dead game for extended periods.

And just when the smell starts to fade it will be time to re-wax!

Place in the sun or use a hair dryer on it.

You'll never believe what oil the parrafin wax is mixed with to achieve the oilcloth's qualities ;)

Also mix in some vanilla essense or other scented oil when reapplying wax to remove any smells
