I'm new here, and not a style or fashion guru.

I'm going to be a groomsman next weekend and have the suit which all the groomsmen will be wearing. The suit can come in a "super slim fit" or a "slim fit." I'm definitely not a super slim guy, and really not what anyone would probably consider a slim guy either. I'm a stocky guy anyway, and there's no denying I could lose a couple pounds as well.

In order to get the slim fit to work, I had to get everything about a size bigger than I normally do. It's getting tailored now, so there's no doubt it will fit. Though it does fit, I can't help but feel that the pants are too slim in the thighs and that the coat simply doesn't look right....like I'm a big guy trying to wear thin guy clothes.

People are reassuring me that this is the style right now; that the clothes are not tight but just a different cut. I suppose I am simply self conscious. Is the a suit I will be able to wear again? Are there any unwritten rules about what size you should be to wear a slim fit? (I feel the answer is in the title.)

You don't have the build to wear slim-fitting suits. That's simply what it comes down to. Which is fine - except that some bride or wedding planner has bought into the notion of uniforming all the men in the wedding party in identical clothing. A horrible idea, but it's grown popular in recent years. Just as short and snug men's clothing has grown popular.

You sized up, and the suit's being altered. No, it probably won't look or feel all that great on you, even so, but it's all you can do. Put up with it for the wedding, then sell/give away the suit, and stick to more traditional fit clothing in the future.

If it makes you feel any better, there may well be a bridesmaid who's 5'2" and 8 months pregnant, but who's being forced to wear a bridesmaid dress which is only comfortable and flattering on a woman who's tall and slender. So you might not be alone in being required to wear something utterly inappropriate for your body type.

This "put them all in matching uniforms, regardless of body type" thinking is why Dante reserved a bolgia in hell specifically for such wedding planners. I believe it was in the eighth circle, between the evil counselors and those who engage in simony.

I'm afraid to say it, but ^^^^ is probably right. Odds of it fitting well are probably actually pretty low. But nothing to do but cross your fingers and hope for the best.

BUT, there is no reason to be self-conscious. I'm a firm believer that the suit does not make the man. Not going to change anything if it turns out this isn't the best fitting suit you've ever had. Rock it the best you can, and if it isn't perfect, just get to work on making sure the next one fits better.
