I was wondering if anyone could give advice on where to pick up a small, slim-fit trench for under or around $100. I like this one by John Varvatos currently on sale at Gilt Groupe, but the sizing indicates it would be around a size 38, which would be too large for me (I wear a slim-fit size 36 suit). I'd like the trench to be cut down to slightly below the waist. Thanks! Sometimes I wish I lived in Japan, as it seems like it'd be much easier to find stuff there that would fit me.

There was a very nice mottled wool Hugo Boss trench on sale at Saks for just under
$90. Sale goes 'til 12/7, so you may want to check it out. It's down from $300.

I think it may be too short for that - this may have been a 3/4 trench, or maybe a tad shorter, even. It was also quite thin - not half as thick as a peacoat, but about the same length.

Try H&M. I picked up a nice slim fitting black 3/4 trench last year; they it had in tan as well. Iirc, they made something similar for this fall, in a shorter length... Price should be around your budget.
