Slim Body = Slim Tie?

I've noticed a number of otherwise unrelated threads recently in which a poster has remarked, e.g., "I like slim ties mainly because I'm a slim guy," or other words to that effect.

Is there really a consensus here that thin people should wear thin ties?

It seems a dubious principle to me. To my eye the more important variables bearing on appropriate tie width have to do with the clothes rather than the body: lapel width, buttoning point on the jacket, collar geometry, etc.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

Cheers,

Ac

I think what both your point, and theirs, allude to is proportionality. They are wanting to keep things in proportion to their bodies, and you are pointing out the value of all elements of wardrobe being in proportion to one another. I think that those same people would also want to wear narrower lapels, and slimmer fitting suits, that suit their body proportions. There is also just the factor of someone's comfort zone. Wearing a shirt and tie without a jacket is also the fashion at the moment for lots of people, and I think that look is best suited to thin guys, with thin ties, and slim fit shirts. Familiarity surely plays a role. I'm short, and fairly slim, but also have broad shoulders, so I enjoy the fact that I can wear a slim fit suit with 2.5" lapels - I even have a thrifted SC with 2" lapels - as well as classic fits and looks, and they all look well proportioned on me. I, like all guys, have evolved in my style, but also in the variety I'm comfortable with. It makes sense to stick to a template you know works, until you feel a bit more confident in trying new things. Wearing a fit with confidence is as, if not more, important than what you wear.
