I'm in search of a black patent balmoral. Can be either captoe or plain toe.
Preferable on sleek, non-pointed last. Any recommendations?

The best i have found so far is the C&J cheam.
Ferragamo also has some nice models. Is it true that it's hard to discern leather quality for patent leather so it doesn't make sense to pay up for one of the better makers?

Edit: thoughts on this Sutor?

No, there are still good and bad patent leather, just as there are good and poor corrected grain calfskin. The quality of the lining and construction matters too.

The only thing is that the difference in price between a good and bad patent leather shoe is not as great as those between good and bad calf shoes.

Florsheim has a plain toe patent Oxford. I think J and M have both Oxford and derbys. Might not be as well constructed as the brands you named but you are likely only gonna be wearing them a few hours a year so hard wearing construction and double soles are not as necessary as an office dress shoe.
