Heres the mail they sent me.

    Dear Sir

    Thank you for your email.

The Chelsea can be made to order on the 888 last, this takes about 12 / 14 weeks.

    Kind regards

It wasn't I who said it was possible, it was vorkanz. On the contrary, I was under the impression that EG wouldn't do this make-up.

Aye, sorry about that. I've e-mailed my EG contact and asked him to shed some light on this. It might be a mistake from EG and Robert, or they have introduced a new policy without notifying their retailers. :)

This is incorrect. I just got a confirmation from EG. They will not make the Chelsea on the 888 last. If you want a similar style on the 888 they offer Gladstone on this last.

To quote my EG contact "I work closely with Robert and have just shown him this quote and he has no idea when he wrote this..."

I'll have to ask Dean about that. Please e-mail us for further specific MTO questions.

As much as I love EG, their consistency about what style/last/pattern confuses me. I have a pair of Chelseas on 888 actually: [IMG] The only thing I can think of is if they stock that model "especially" for a distributor (e.g., Brooks Brothers).

Around 2011 they started limiting which lasts could be used for certain models. They are now very strict about this.

As I suspected. Thanks for clearing this upp Leaves! Does this also mean that they won't even do it on the 888 as a top drawer MTO?

I personally applaud EG for this decision. It gives their shoes a kind of "artistic integrity" in a world where every other shoe maker lets you decide just about everything, just as long as you pay enough.

Is that integrity or just doing what's easiest for them? I don't necessarily think the latter is 100% awful but I doubt the decision has anything to do with integrity.

It's ironic that I actually agree with this. I cannot wear 888 and 82 lasts but if EG thinks that Inverness would not look good on 202 last they have every right to limit Inverness to only one last.

Quote:I doubt anyone would dispute that they have the right to do exactly as they please. When working with a manufatcurer directly, though , I'd much sooner deal with one that was eager to work with me to find the right combination of size, last and materials to suit my wishes (as was my experience with St. Crispin's) than one whose attitude was contemptuously dismissive of the customer's preferences. Whether that fairly describes EG or not I can't say, bu tmy impression from forum reports is that they are at least a few steps down that path. Thankfully, I find a number of their stock models very appealing indeed, and working with the good people at Skoak is an absolute pleasure.

I am not the one who knows the answer to this, for sure. However, I like to think that the reason has to do with aesthetics and integrity, but I might as well be totally wrong. Maybe its just me being romantic about the whole situation.

I think it's telling that they stopped doing certain models/combinations -- and this is me going by what others have said, so I may be wrong to repeat that if incorrect -- that they used to do for many years. I don't think their aesthetic vision changed overnight. That said, they still make many beautiful shoes. I'm not the owner of any yet but hope to join the club soon.
