I'm about 6 ft and about 150lbs looking to buy a new tie. Which type of tie would suit me better a skinny or a wide tie? Whats the reason to wear a skinny or a wide tie?

It depends on the width of your lapels, the length of your collar points and the shape of your face, as well as ideas of fashion & style.

It really is a personal style choice, putting aside the whims of fashion. As others have pointed out, your tie should roughly match the width of your lapels. My preference is for a 3 to 3 1/4 inch tie and thinner lapels on my suits, such as those found on BB Fitzgerald or RL Black Label. Many of my coworkers comment on my "skinny" ties, so I consider this to be outside the mainstream, at least in my industry (finance).

+1. I like slim lapels so I wear slim ties.

it all depends on what you are wearing.
These balck and white answers rarely apply to fashion.

Stay away from skinny ties, that goes for everyone.

I'd go with a tie that's 3 inches in width.

Go with a slim tie, meaning around 3 inches at the widest point.

Anything less than that is basically an anorexic tie.

I am around your height and weight and have settled on 3 and 1/4 inches as my tie width. It is on the slim end of normal. I should be able to wear this width for the rest of my life.

I'm 6'1, 185, and i go with 3.25 to 3.75 for most purposes and try to match it up somewhat with my lapel width. I think anything thinner than 3" looks a little bit odd for most outfits. and 4" is a little bit too wide.

Please do not take offense, but I find the idea of maintaining two tie wardrobes to conform to the vagaries of fashion ridiculous.
