Size down on a DB suit?

Does anyone here typically go one size down on double breasted suits? I'm exploring purchasing my first one, but every one I have tried on hangs like a sack in the waist. It is terribly unflattering. Just looking for some general tips on how to pick up my first DB.

thanks.

Generally, I find fit more important on double breasted jackets since they should always be buttoned and look silly open. In that regard, waist size shouldnt be that big of an issue since you should be able to tailor it. However, chest/shoulder size should fit right from the beginning.

I don't think so. I buy size 44 most of the time, if the shoulders allow, with my chest currently measured at 43.75". There just seems to be so much extra in the waist in DB suits. Like the designers expect only fat guys to wear them.

Thanks for the advice. I tried one on at Nordstrom the other day and the tailor said he would have to recut the jacket in order to take in the waist for it to have any kind of shape on me.

My DB was much more fiddly to fit than my SBs. A badly fitting DB runs a larger risk of looking like a sack, with too much in the chest and tails and skirt that drape oddly.

I would definitely recommend paying particular attention to waist suppression, front balance and button stance. Err on the side of a trim waist, high buttons and a balanced front without excessive skirt.

Canali 52 drop 7 in a single breasted jacket fits me beautifully.
The same size and drop in a double breasted makes me look fat. Evendently they change a lot between their single and double breasted models.

I'm still open to the idea of a DB jacket..but I haven't found the right one yet.

My DB suits from Polo and Paul Stuart fit the same as their SB.
