Single vs Double button Cuffs

I want to get other views on this.

Double is obviously more formal.
So are there certain shirts it wouldn't work on? And a single button would be more appropriate?

I'm asking because I put in an order for MTM shirts; reverse stripe blue OCBD, pink fine twill, and white royal twill. All with double button barrel roll.

I can always change it though, since production is on hold.

IMO, it doesn't make that big of a difference.

I can't think of a shirt where it matters enough.

Here is a double button cocktail cuff in blue striped linen

The only type of cuff combination I can think of that'd be too formal for many shirts is french cuffs.

Yes, good point. I believe french cuffs would really only work for white/blue shirts with maybe a few other possible ones?

I believe @upr_crust uses them fairly frequently, he might be able to give more knowledge on that. I'm not super familiar them.
I dont think that anyone will notice but you. Two buttons is twice as much work when you get dressed.
Amen on twice as much work. Seems minor, but it does matter when you're feeling lazy and reaching for a shirt in the morning.

Barrel cuffs with two buttons are no more formal, in my opinion, than barrel cuffs with one button. French cuffs (or double cuffs) are more formal. And you can put French cuffs on any shirt you like. I don't have French cuffs on a button-down collar shirt, like an OCBD, but some people have. It's up to you. Personally, all my shirts that are meant to be worn with a tie have french cuffs, all casual shirts, like an OCBD, have barrel cuffs. With one button.

On this question, I have to agree with Andy57. I have a very large collection of shirts, many French cuffed with either spread, tab or eyelet collars, in a variety of colors and patterns, and many buttondown collars with button cuffs, equally spread between solid colors and patterns. I have very few non buttondown collared shirts with button cuffs. One button or two on a cuff makes little difference to me in terms of relative formality - I have some with two buttons, though most with one, and it's entirely accident of the draw. (For the record, as an interesting side note, Turnbull & Asser makes their button cuffed shirts with three buttons, possibly with some nod to formality, but one would have to ask them.)

With OCBD one button is customary.

Thanks for the insight everyone. I will definitely get just one button on my OCBD, and leave the rest of my dress shirts as 2 buttons.

OCBD: single button cuff
Pink: single/ double button cuff
White: Double button cuff
