Yeah, the fact that he doesn't have something suitable already means that it probably just needs to look good for a couple hours. Even then, a 4 day rush job will probably fit and look better than an OTR Men's Warehouse or JC Penney suit... which means that in five years when the old man wears it again... he'll still be looking alright!

neither. its a serious question... haven't been to sing in years, and when I was there it was all logo'd brand-whore designers and there was nothing comparable to say, lane crawford in hkg, and that goes for both classic and streetwear style. even bangkok offers alternatives to the euro-trash look, so I was just wondering if there's choices now in sing-la or is it still all about having the monogram and logo?

He likes to keep it fresh and buy a new one every couple years so it will only be used for a couple of weddings.

Living in Oz now so I only visit occasionally, but from what little I can tell... ayup... it's still the same tragedy.

However, I understand that Herringbone Sydney - Phat Guido's go-to RTW suit maker - has opened a retail space in Takashimaya, on Lvl 3. Don't know if they stock the full range of goodies or only the core shirts and suits, but will check it out next time I'm there.

Horizon looks bleak otherwise.

Singapore has a horrible selection of products to choose from. The best shoes to be found here are Church's. The rest are from your usual suspects (Prada, Ferragamo, E. Zegna...). I did read an article recently highlighting a small shift towards high-end products. Corthay apparently had a Trunk show at Raffles Hotel and Stefano Ricci's main tailor will be here next month. But this does not mean that there will be retail stores anytime soon.

For some reason, department stores in Singapore remind me of Kmart. They stock a lot of trashy items and have very poor visual merchandising...

FWIW, the only shopping I do in Singapore is at Uniqlo... for shorts to sweat around in

Ten years ago it was a good place to find camera gear and PDA accessories that had not yet reached the U.S.A. I wonder if the internet has since flattened that advantage.

I remember there being a hell of a lotta ladyboys in Singapore. And the transit system is ACE.

I was spending about one week a month there for most of last year and struggled. Never found a tailor I was willing to risk (somebody referred me to one in the basement of Cuppage Tower, off Orchard Rd, but, on perusal, wasn't remotely tempted. I ended up up just frequenting the Uniqlo and Muji stores for underwear, T shirts, etc, as Australia, where I was living until Christmas, has neither. The Brooks Bros store only opened in time for my final visit.

On the plus side, I ate myself daft. Still trying to shed the extra stone I put on over the course of the year as well as trying to perfect my own chicken rice (either I'm not doing it right or it simply doesn't taste the same now I'm back in rainy old London).

Quote from the WSJ blog:

"Come April, Mr. Rubinacci will be the "face" of a store in Singapore, called the Rake, which will open at the Malmaison shopping gallery within the Knightsbridge mall. The shop, which will be run by a friend of Mr. Rubinacci's and sell Rubinacci clothes as well as other labels, is the tailoring house's only retail presence in Asia, outside of Japan."

The store is called Malmaison and will have their grand opening in June (I think). When I was there earlier in the month, they had several Corthay shoes and no Rubinacci yet.

Takashimaya also has a Berluti retail store, if anyone is interested.

If I were you, I'd do the following

1) Do most of your shopping on-line from The Armoury in Hong Kong (Drakes, Ring Jacket, Carmina, G&G etc);
2) Actually pop into Hong Kong or Japan for a more complete sartorial range;
3) Check out the Herringbone concessionary at Taka as a last resort (don't know how much stock they might have or whether prices will be inflated);

Not much else otherwise; not unless you'll be there during the Great SG Sale, in which case you might be able to pick up some gems on huge discount, and coupled with the power of the almighty Aussie $, the savings can be quite substantial. As an example, I once picked up a zip-neck RLPL cashmere knit for < $400AUD.

Just sayin, mate...
