Silk umbrella canopy?

I've narrowed down my umbrella choice to SAB in hickory. I plan to buy from classic luggage in DC. Besides the price of the umbrella itself, there is an option for a silk canopy ($500). I'm not interested in discussing the value (worth it or not). I would like to know what the benefit of silk over nylon would be??? Is it thicker or more distinctive? Any negatives?

Remember, silk can have a distinct smell. If you like that smell or are not sensitive to it, go for it.

Silk isn't as waterproof as nylon and can let a fine mist through in heavy rain. It's also more prone to staining.

I can't tell much difference in the sound. But I'm not one for lazy strolls in the rain. I'm usually rushing to get inside.

The coolest part of silk, in my book, is that it's slightly translucent. Let's just a bit of light through, so it looks a little different than nylon, at least from underneath.

Having tried silk, I can't say I'd pay the premium for another.
