I'm not crazy about the idea, the knit or the color. For me, knit ties are play ties, very informal. Black is too funereal for a wedding. I would wear something else.

I don't think it'll be too bad, personally, so I'd say go for it, having worn a knit tie to a wedding.
Everybody seemed to like the idea of a knitted tie, even at a formal event.

Personally, I think a knit tie is ok for a wedding, but I would wear a black one.

^I also wore a knit tie to a wedding in the summer, although it was outdoor and I had on a seersucker suit.

Don't wear a black tie to a wedding unless it's after 6, it's a bow tie and you have a dinner jacket to go with it.

I think it really depends on the wedding. If it's your run of the mill event, meaning only the groomsmen are wearing anything like a "Tuxedo", I think wearing a knit tie would be a nice way to differentiate yourself from the crowd of poorly dressed men.

However I must agree that black is not advisable for a wedding.

If it's a more formal event then I would probably shy away from the knit tie idea and go for something in silk.

I wore a white spread collar FC shirt with a icy lilac colored silk tie (suit had narrow-ish lapels and the tie was about 2.75") and purple and white PS to a wedding. It was smashing success. I was the only guy there with a PS and received many compliments. Scored massive bonus points with the date, she loved it as she was wearing a purple-ish colored dress.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The groom's a good friend of mine, and when I asked what kind of attire he was expecting for the wedding, his answer was: "Just wear a suit or whatever." So I have a feeling the rules are a bit more flexible for this wedding, which is why I want to try something a little different.

I think you may be right that the color (black) may be more inappropriate than the knit idea.
