Side buckles on trousers

Quick question regarding trouser adjusters: must the d-ring always pull the cloth toward the rear? My tailor insists that the proper positioning is for the adjusters to pull forward. This is the opposite of every pair of side buckling trousers I've ever seen, but this tailor of mine seems to know at he's doing. Are backward buckles on trousers a definite no-no?

I've never seen that before; I don't think they would look good.

Side adjusters with buttons or buckles are two ways of doing it. Whether they pull to the front or back is up to you. The best daks tops I have seen have a band of material that goes through the back of the trousers through the waist band. Difficult to describe, but image a "tunnel" through the back part of the waist band and a strip of material that goes through this. Pulling on the strip with side adjusters tightens the waist. Adjusters with material stitched to the outside of the waistband are not the best way IMO.

I have two pairs of Paul Stuart trousers that feature side buckles. They both pull towards the rear.

Thanks for the feedback. Next question -- would removing these backward side tabs and flipping them around so that they face the proper direction do harm to the trousers? They are made from Harrison's of Edinburgh Super 150s worsted.

Can't you just tell your tailor to have them face whichever way you want them to?

After all, you're the one that's paying for them and so if you want side adjusters that pull backwards, that's what your tailor should do, even if he thinks that they should face forwards.

It's probably just due to force of habit but I think that having them "pull forward" would look odd and it just seems to be physically easier to pull them backwards, rather than forwards, too.

Thank you all for the wise counsel. I've reversed the tabs and the trousers look splendid.
