D: Personally, I’ve always believed that being stylish requires some endurance. I mean, a middle-aged man sporting a tweed suit on a scorching day in September looks sophisticated to me. What I design is therefore based on such an idea. But I do understand people who love comfortable clothes, too. So I recently dare to adopt synthetic fabrics if I like the texture and appearance. In this collection, for example, I find the fake melton fabric quite nice. It looks like real wool at first glance, but it’s actually 100% polyester, lightweight and easy-to-care.

I've been pleasantly surprised by EG's mixed fabrics having handled fabrics of similar fiber content that were itchy, that shed excessively etc. The fake melton is kind of fascinating to me, though. I think back to sweating in my 100% polyester school blazer and it's hard not to imagine the same discomfort in the heavy polyester EG coats. Would love to hear from anyone who owns one.

That’s rationalization for using cheaper fabrics to generate bigger margin as the brand has scaled and still charges more. Supported EG since the early days in NYC when Oliver Spencer sold it, but it’s hard justify the cost.

Yea I don't want that to come across as "Oh they covered it, this absolves them for using manmade fabrics" I think I just wanted to see what sort of justifications and rationale the brand had to say for themselves.

Yeah. I love their jacket cuts, but when they’re charging a thousand bucks for a slinky machine-made jacket and matching pants — the same as a really nice suit — that’s just weird.

That said, as far as I know, it seems like they’re still offering the same fabrics — wool, high count twill, etc. — for most everything.

speaking of mixed fabrics, has anyone seen an FW21 Lawrence jacket made in this plaid pattern?

there's one in the lookbook but I've only seen Loiter jackets on sale so far

I'm not a fan of EG's synthetics but that's probably bc i had a bad experience with the poly jacquard cardigan from 2014 or so. It was insanly expensive here in France, like 440 euros, and it started pilling almost immediately. I'm OK with some poly in wool outerwear, but no more than say, 15-20 percent. I just like all natural fabrics better, even fiber derived ones like rayon/viscose are ok.

Regarding poly, I don’t mind it if it’s something obvious and adventurous like the nylon micro-ripstop or the satin. That stuff just looks neat.
