The common advice to achieve symmetry between those three is to have all three be the same width. 3.5 inch lapel, tie, and shirt collar, for example. Supposedly, this creates a balanced appearance. However, the width of the tie is measured at the widest point at the bottom of the tie... so the part of the tie in the "visual triangle" between shirt collar, tie, and lapel will actually be narrower than 3.5 inches.
For someone with a 3.5 inch lapel and shirt collar, should he be wearing 3.75 or 4 inch ties instead?
Is there a way to know how wide a tie will be underneath the knot based on the tie width across the bottom?
