If you like skinnies, wear a skinny. I think a skinny tie looks better on a shirt with no jacket/sweater/whatever over it, so if I might take off my sweater, I would likely wear one but that's a personal preference.. It may be a pretty newb thing around here, but I still like my nautica quarter zip black sweater with a beige skinny tie under it. Really, whichever way you're leaning, and will feel better about how you look, is the way to go. Neither is wrong, in my opinion. My wife's $0.02 is that the skinny tie will look less preppy. So, if you want to be preppy, standard tie. If you want to be not preppy, skinny tie. According to her, anyway. I remain skeptical. No not really... seems to make sense to me too.

Wear a tie in proportion to your lapel and chest width.

Can we make it so you need 50 posts before you can start a thread, please, mods?

why ever would you wear a tie to a party at your parents' home? Far too formal in the twenty first century unless they are royalty or the like.

That quite depends on the party, and the crowd! I throw a Black Tie Optional party, well, started as of this year. I'm neither royalty, nor the like, but I do enjoy nice clothes (hence being on this forum) and my wife and I just plain wanted to do it, and want to continue to do it. Most everyone showed up in a minimum of suit and tie; one in a sweater and tie, who was making the rounds of three parties that night (a difficult situation, and so I thought he did well trying to dress for all possibilities, plus I know he doesn't own a jacket because he can't get a good OTR fit due to his irregular shape). My father wore his Tux, with a black based, grey and white patterned bow tie that was quite fun, and appropriate to a private, less formal, yet still formal, affair. Two other guests were in Tuxedos. The party was made the better for it, as it was a nice opportunity for more formal dress in a world where it is increasingly rare. A good time had by all; of course the punch and cider did help with that.

I've taken to giving more care and attention to how I dress on a daily basis, because I've finally decided not to let the place I live dictate to me what I do and do not care about. I like looking good; I think the lax in standards of some formality have been detrimental to men in a number of ways, and so I dress how I feel I look best, and how suits my mood, and my own standards. Most days, they are higher than those around me, and what of it? I like it. Gentleman333 clearly feels that a tie is appropriate, as he asked what type of tie, not whether to wear one at all. Besides, it is a nice gesture to make a good effort to look good, and reflect well on his parents, in the company of their friends.

Short version: because he wants to, so why not!

Because he writes "It is a Semi-Casual Party ".

There is over dressing to take into account. Had his parents specified 'White Tie', then would have been the correct attire but they have not.

The original poster need not concern himself with being overdressed, particularly with how he plans to wear the tie.

Far too much is being made of the simple wearing of a tie. Wear one wherever and whenever you wish, in good health.

OP, a slimmer width tie is fine. Stay away from an overtly skinny tie.
