I've heard from multiple sources I trust that GS is very good, actually, for the money, and more or less Alden-like which makes sense given their history. I don't have much experience w/ Filson myself and can't speak to the general quality of their product pre-post takeover, but their bags certainly are still venerated. If you're talking about tiers of quality, someone on the next tier is always going to shit on the tier below. Once you get above a certain price point, though, I think it becomes less about big practical differences and more about details and aesthetics.

I want to say Oak Street also has sales that put it sub $400, but I also don't have experience w/ them. And if you want to delve into Indonesian bootmakers, there is a whole enthusiast crowd all up in that market.
Thanks for the reply. I had a pair of OSB but I just hated how the look in person. They look like clown/duck shoes on me, and I just didnt like the silhouette. They were solidly built. Respect for OSB though.

I don't care to dive in too deep, but good to know!

Truman is around $400 and I think they're really nice. There are a ton of models on their website; I'm just posting a random one here.

Dammit yes. Truman was what I was trying to remember when I came up with OSB. I also think they look quite nice. I’ve been out of the workwear boot game too long.

I've heard of truman, those are pretty nice, don't know why the Filsons got me so fired up - happens sometimes! I'll look into it - I really need another boot to wear for the 4 months I can here, certainly don't need more SS shoes ;)

The downside is a 2 month lead time on boots - their current ready made aren't my thing.

@d4nimal thanks!

Mr. P Shearling. Quite like it, anybody has experience with their leathers?
The shearling looks OK to me, but I don't have any experience with Mr. P's leather jackets. The only thing I would be careful of is the color. Tan suede will pick up dirt marks easily and shearling is expensive to clean (much more so than other types of garments). IMO, when purchasing a suede leather, you want to think about how it will age. If it's something like an RRL jacket, that style will probably look better with dirt marks because the style is rugged. If it's a CM-styled shearling or something that's supposed to convey "lux," it might not look so great with dirt marks and then you're stuck with a series of expensive cleaning bills. If you get a "lux" styled shearling, black and dark brown will hide dirt marks better.

Universal works x Sebago. Thoughts?

I bought Quoddy's ring boots about ten years ago and almost never wore them. Personally find them too funky.

I think the Filson look nice- you don't need the "best" in class for every item in your wardrobe. Like you said, most things mentioned here are completely fine for everyday wear. I have John Lofgrens and I have Red Wings. There is a huge price difference there. Do I not enjoy my RW just because the Lofgrens are better built? No, because at the end of the day you can enjoy different looks and unless you're doing serious work in them, they will hold up.

Agree with the above.. Those Filson boots look good. If you like them, will wear them and have the extra money, then buy them. I am sure they will hold up as long as you want them too. So much of the clothing/shoes etc discussed on SF is beyond the quality anyone needs for the types of jobs they have.
