I don't see why, those shoes were awful.

Don't take it personal dude. I'm pretty sure he was commenting on your avatar. If you've ever watched the television show he is in, it's pretty easy to dislike his character.

Both - white KVA and Ann look good. I've owned several KVA and can confirm that quality is good. Haven't owned Ann sneakers so can't comment on them qualitywise.

I like that Dries collection when seen in toto, but just looking at the single pieces, I'm like... ehhhh, scratch head. (though I did pick up a camo/navy jacket).

i feel like this about a lot of dries. if you check out what's on ebay there's a ton of ugly junk on there. but you look at the shows and it all looks cool when put together. it's kinda mystifying, and i think there's something ingenious about it. that said, I do like a bunch of the individual pieces from this season.

Dries talked about this in an interview in March 2012 that I thought was interesting. http://nymag.com/thecut/2012/03/dries-van-noten-on-postnatal-depression.html

On his use of fabrics: “I’m more inspired by things which I don’t like ... nothing is so boring as something beautiful. I prefer ugly things, I prefer things which are surprising ... You force yourself to ask yourself questions. Quite often I make a collection and I say, ‘Here’s a color I really don’t like.’ ... My assistants will say 'Okay, you don’t like lilac,' [that means] this season will be lilac. It’s like you see a color, and you think, Why don’t I like this color? Maybe the composition is wrong, maybe the lighting is wrong — it would be beautiful in silk, but not the synthetic fabric ... That for me is the fun, to play with all the [fabrics] ... Sometimes fabrics come in two to three weeks before the collection has to be ready. Sometimes you get carried away ... [But] when everything goes too smooth, I start to worry. I think, maybe it’s not good. It has to be a bit of a struggle. If it’s going too smooth … I think, My goodness, still three months to go. Maybe I’ll be bored by the time it’s over. Let’s add some things.”

thanks for that, pickpuck ^ I'd read that fabric comment before somewhere. It esp. makes me think of this upcoming Fall collection with what at first looks like ugly-ass damask sofa upholstery. somehow Dries transforms it into something cool and psychedelic. but yeah the eBay detritus kinda shows you what happens as you take singular items out of their cozy runway themes. I still love him, btw. this thing probably happens to almost every brand.

in terms of what to buy for one's own wardrobe and apropos this thread, it's a tougher issue. I think it's too easy to be swayed by either a runway collection or a brand image (this piece must be good since brand X has great reputation or has cool shows/ads/whetever) or even store presenation. I know I've bought things in the past just because of this. I try really hard to evaluate individual things based on what looks good on me and with my other clothes. Not everything will go together obviously, but at least there will be some personal coherence.

I know exactly what you mean. I feel like at times I'll buy a piece because I'm buying into this fantasy you see on the runway (which is a great commercial tool as much as it is artistic), but then once the piece is in my closet it's not part of that fantasy anymore; it's just a piece of clothing that I have to figure out what to wear with and whether I really like it, etc etc.
