Should slim fit suits pull in the chest? I wear a 42r in regular suits and every 42r i try on seems to pull in the chest in that size (Theory, Van Gils). Should i size up to a 44r or is that the way they are suppose to look when buttoned?

A picture would help to understanding what you mean by 'pulling.' If the lapels 'bow' when you button, and there's a signficant 'X' crease at the buttoning point when you button the jacket, then chest and/or the waist is too small for your frame. It wouldn't hurt to try on a 44r to see if it makes a difference. Not knowing how you look overall, it's hard to say if sizing up would make any difference for you, though it likely would.

Im 6' 190pd slim athletic build. I bought a Theory suit (42r) and had it tailored last season. Definitely should have sized up as when u button the jacket it does cause an "x" at the buttoning point but no "bow" unless you put your arm out to the side ect. Looks fine if unbuttoned. I took a new Med Device sales gig and about to buy a couple new suits at the local Saks off 5th outlet but didn't want to make the same mistake twice. Tried on a 42r Van Gils suit and loved the look, but looked like i was running into the same problem as the theory when buttoned. But they had no 44r to try on so i held off purchasing anything.

Sometimes it's small across the chest, sometimes it's related to the slope of the shoulder, sometimes it's fused construction that has no shaping to the chest. Any of these causes are difficult to adjust and sometimes correcting the issue is not possible

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
