Looking for suggestions on a pair of go-to shorts for spring and summer. A few parameters: slim fit, inconspicuous color, inseam between seven and nine inches. Not willing to spend more than $100.

Cut offs: Take a pair of denims and cut the legs to this measurement, hem or not at your choice. Fit the bill admirably, quite cheap and certainly inconspicuous colour. Not every-one's ideal but comfortable and practical.

This might end up in a nice fitting pair of shorts, but they would be denim shorts. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks of them, but I can't bring myself to wear denim shorts. Do this with a nice-fitting pair of khakis though, and you might be on to something (provded they get hemmed).

Shoot, I just realized that the OP described the shorts I lived in for much of high school to a tee...

Get a pair of navy blue sweatpants at Walmart. Cut them off to desired length. Wear... They're super comfortable, and inconspicuous. Of course, I never dated any girls in high school. I'm not sure if there's a connection... [IMG]

Thanks for the suggestion, but if I were the jorts-wearing type, I wouldn't have posted in the Classic Menswear forum.

All my shorts are hiking shorts. My faves are Patagonia and Mountain Hardwear. Can't help with "stylish" options...

+1 on the J.Crew recommendation. And if you keep an eye out, they're always going on sale.

Last year I purchased some J Crew shorts in a tan color. They work well, fit well, and are cut above the knee. I recommend them.

JCrew shorts fit well, don't last too long however. I have had better luck with Land End Canvas, slim fitting and hold up better than JCrew's offerings.

Thanks, I had been trying to avoid J Crew, but I might end up snagging a pair of some 9" lightweight club shorts soon.

+1 - I've spent the past couple of summers living in LE Canvas chino shorts and they are great value for money. Comfortable, hard-wearing fabric that softens up nicely, good colours, good length and good pockets. I've got green, granite, natural, Nantucket red and faded navy and I regret not having picked up more!

If you are gonna wear shorts you may just as well go about naked.

Given the climate, nudity would be optimal. But in light of certain societal constructs and self restraints, shorts have emerged as my best option to beat the heat.

Shorts are shorts, honestly. There's really no sartorial way of going about getting high fashion shorts. Get what feels comfortable and what you'd be comfortable wearing. Just don't do the "baggy" look. It's not an attractive style.

Anyone familiar with these RL Hudson shorts? I'll probably order some online and return whichever ones don't fit.
