Shortening a trench coat

I recently bought a navy Burberrys' trench coat from the 80s and I love it!
The problem is that it reaches to about mid-calf which is a bit too long for my liking, especially considering I'm not all that tall at 5'9".
It's also a bit baggy around the midsection which is to be expected with a traditional design.

I'm considering having about 10-15cm taken off at the bottom and maybe have it taken in at the same time, if this is at all possible.

So that leaves me wondering, is this feasible? Would I need to seek out a special tailor to do the job and would it possibly ruin the coat?

I expect I'll have to have it reproofed, since the side seems would have to be undone.


Any suggestions or ideas are welcome

Shortening it by that much could throw off the proportions. How does it fit now? i.e. Are all the pockets etc in the right places?

Yeah there's nothing wrong with it, it fits well but it just reaches so low I almost look like a relic haha

I'll say this; don't shorten it too much. I wouldn't go above your knees. Perhaps shorten it first before you slim it down too, so you can wear it for a while. You might prefer more room than you'd think at first. Here are my reasons for this advice:

I've been looking for a nice trench coat a consignment stores, but haven't had luck. I think there's a reason for that. A good trench isn't something people seem to get rid of once they find one they like.

I did find a nice overcoat that isn't too warm (I run hot) and I love the fact that the length goes below my knees, but just beneath. It is slightly more roomy than I thought I'd want, but that has turned into a blessing. I can wear it sitting down comfortably and don't have to adjust it constantly while sitting in a vehicle.

^ Echo the above. There's nothing wrong with a trench falling somewhere in the middle between knee and ankle, especially if coat is DB.

Also, if yours features a wedge vent, adjustment could be difficult.
