Hello Friends:

Is there a specific range (length in inches) for the short vs regular vs tall jackets that are Off the Rack? Or is it a definite number...?

Thanks.

No, there is a wide variation with length of coat between top line manufacturers.

I wear long in most good North American mfgrs; Sammy, HF, etc.

I wear long in Zegna, Canali, and RLPL by St Andrews.

I wear regular in Kiton, Brioni and Isaia.

FWIW, 40S averages around 29.5" from the bottom of the collar. When you can find a 40S that is

And I suppose that is a good measurement to know.

Take a coat that fits you well and measure it from the bottom of the collar seam to the hem. (I also measure from the top of the collar as not all folks know to measure from the bottom.)

That is the length you are looking for.

For me I prefer 31.5-32.5 from the bottom (33-34 total length) of the collar.

Kiton, Brioni and Isaia will go about 35 total length in their e54L and hence I wear regulars with them.

Be careful about measurements; STP carries the measurement in the description but it is a stock number and no way indicative of actual measurement. Ebay sellers are notoriously poor measurers.

So my advice is to either buy from someone with an absolute no qustions asked return policy or buy from a brick and mortar store and try on the garment.

Good Shopping,

In my experience the sleeve and body length are usually 2" apart in difference between the shorts, regulars, and longs if that helps any.

There is usually 1" difference between short and regular and regular and long. Every maker has their own idea of what the correct length is. There is no industry standard.

Yes and no. Generally speaking (based on my experience with rtw brands) shorter than 30" = short, 30-31.75" means regular, 32" plus = long (measured from the bottom of the collar.) If the jacket is a US 46 or larger then add 1" to the above measurements, 50 or larger add 2".

Unfortunately there are more factors that bear on correct length than actual jacket length. Most importantly the height of the gorge (lapel notch) and button position. The higher those two are the shorter the jacket can be. Shoulder width and shape also plays a role. There is a need to develop and trust your eye to get the right length for the specific cut.

Actually, I suspect that it has less to do with you being "wrong" than with you and despos working from different "data sets", given the lack of a uniform industry standard.

sorry to bring to life an old thread..

anyone have a clear idea of difference (in inches or centimeters) between short - regular - long?

i'm 5'7, and prefer to buy shorts but have been buying some OTR off the internet and usually i do not have the luxury of buying "short", so curious to know how much i need to take off the jackets...

in other SF threads i've read you dont want to take off more than .5 - 1' on a jacket or you risk throwing off the silouette/proportions..anyone of more knowledge in this arena?

Typically, in North America, the difference in jacket length between short and regular or regular and tall is 1 1/2", and the sleeve grades 1".
