The other day I put on a sports coat over a polo in a cold office. It did not look as douchey as I expected. I was a little disappointed.

The key was the color of the polo, light blue, which is what I would have worn in a dress shirt with the same coat (med-dark gray overall, mini hounds pattern) and trousers (khaki chinos). I think it would look fine, maybe good in its own way, with a white polo shirt too. Or maybe a light pink.

But whoever noted above, that you will be putting your bare neck on the jacket's collar, was spot on. That's a problem. I would not want to soil a sports coat's neck by doing this often -- unless I had made up my mind to beat the coat to the death & enjoy wearing it hard.

FWIW, Clooney and Pitt look awful in that picture. To me they look like a pair of smarmy assholes, or those guys who went to the disco on Saturday Night Live. To each their own

Long sleeve polos are acceptable though correct? So the only real difference is the sleeves. Some jackets now come with narrower sleeves and the insides are really soft (see Armani), it's as if they want you to wear short sleeve polos under them. I don't think it would work with the typical sleeve width though because it would feel strange with the breeze coming up through your jacket sleeves.

Dude, the way of doing things is dressing for the situation, and if that situation calls for a polo shirt with a linen blazer and a pair of shorts, thats what i'm wearing.

I'm fine with the polo under sportcoat thing. It's pretty common at cocktail hour/dinner at a golf club. But what situation ever calls for a jacket and shorts?

I would do it only with a navy blazer, loafers, a ribbon belt, and khakis. Or, perhaps, loudly coloured shorts.

Seems like an awful lot (7 pages) of discussion on a 50 year dressy casual staple.

Heck if you don't like it don't wear it, but I am assuming you can't play golf or tennis either.

I think the headline would read "Tiny man found in Gangbox by overtime crew"

"yeah hey, this is big tony, i thought the little bastard was a sledge hammer, the one end was huge, and the rest of him skinny."

"Yeah i stuck him in a gangbox"

After further investigation they would find that mafoo was taunting the crew by pointing out that their RTW sleeve pitches were off, and that their safety glasses were not bespoke, nore their flannel shirts.

By no means imho should a logoed polo be worn!

IMO, I think a tee is worse than a polo. However, Fuuma does seem to pull it off well, unlike most guys who I see sporting the look.
