Shopping in NYC

I will be going on vacation to NYC over Christmas and I was wondering what favorites you have as far as shopping in the city. Still deciding on how much I want to put out for clothes while Im there, but I'm from Florida so I dont have any form of comparable shopping here.

I'd like to hit Saks, I've heard Century 21 has good deals, and maybe Barneys, NM, or Bergdorf. I have never been to NYC before though, so do you have some good tips or places other than the major stores I mentioned?

On a side note, any personal picks for hotels or food while there?

No Neiman Marcus in NYC I'm afraid

Bergdorf, Saks, Barneys, Brioni, Oxxford, Kiton, etc are must see in Midtown.
Also, Chinatown is must see, then head north on Broadway.

I'd add Polo in the Rhinelander Mansion to the list.

Also, if you like the trad look, you should see Brooks Bros, J. Press, Paul Stuart, and Alden.

Also the window display at Paul Stuart is, in my opinion, unparalleled.

If you have time (and access to a car), you can go north to Woodbury Commons outlet. It's about a 50 minute car ride from NYC, but is hands down the best outlet in the country.

I'm visiting NYC myself for New Years Eve. I plan to hit the John Lobb boutique among many other places. Kabay seems like a unique store as well.

Depending on your tastes (that is, if you're fairly conservative like me

), check out Jay Kos on Lexington (expensive, but nice items) and Alan Flusser's shop on East 48th, I believe (ditto expensive). I also agree that the Polo Rhinelander is a must. The Art of Shaving has several Manhattan shops, including one on Madison in midtown. Cambridge Chemists; Kiehl's; I also agree with the suggestions of Barneys, Saks and BG Men. In any one of these establishments, be prepared for attitude, and simply brush it off. Century 21 is very hit-or-miss, but worth a stop. Seigo for ties...hmmm, this could go on. We haven't gotten to museums or restaurants yet. Have a good time!

Considering that you'll be in the city over Christmas, you definitely should stop by Saks the day after Christmas. IMO, they have the best sale at that time.

You don't need a car to go to Woodbury Common. There's bus service from Port Authority on weekends, holidays and major shopping days like days after Thanksgiving and X'mas. The bus is usually full cute Japanese tourists travelling in pairs.

Agree. It's 50% off already reduced prices and they open early on that day, small crowds usually gather before they open. You could get a pair EG for $350 or a Borrelli shirt for $120.

Not sure what your budget is, but for some interesting mid-high end perspectives, the UES Madison walk is quite nice. Starting from the RL Rhinelander mansion (72nd + Madison) heading south, you'll come across Loro Piana (68th + Madison) for some interesting outerwear, a little further down Hermes (62nd + Madison). Across the street from there is the Lobb boutique (61st + Madison) which is very nice and next door to that you can find Robert Talbott (if you like his bright colored tie creations, be sure to check the drawers).

Interesting luncheon options in the area: Park Ave Cafe one block east on 63rd St and Park Ave. http://parkavenuecafe.com/lunch.asp .

Thereafter, heading over to the 5th scene starting with Bergdorf at 57th and 5th (east side of the street is men's, west side is women's). Many more options to follow south notably Brooks Brothers on 53rd (although I prefer the one on 44th and Madison) and Saks on 49th St.

Interesting brunch/luncheon options in the area: Rue57 on 57th st and 6th Ave. http://www.rue57.com

From Saks, heading back over to Madison you have Paul Stuart (45th and Madison) and Brooks Brothers (44th and Madison). Also can find the smaller Allen Edmonds store (which tends to have the better availability and staff I've found) on 44th btwn Madison + 5th.

Interesting eateries in the area: Ipanema, in little Brazil, for brazillian food (46th btwn 5th and 6th)

As far as other eateries within the city of interest, I'd recommend "Peter Luger" in Brooklyn just across the bridge (Steak, cash only, make reservations) http://www.peterluger.com, "Gramercy Tavern" in Gramercy/Union/Washington Sq area for good all around http://www.gramercytavern.com, and Serendipity (desserts, try and get there around 10p or expect a wait, welcome to nyc) http://www.serendipity3.com

Davide Cenci is great. I still haven't bought anything there, but it's always a nice place to visit.

Bergdorf is definitely worth a visit.

great map! Re: Serendipity....I tried going there just before 10pm and the wait was to come back in 1.5 hours in order to put your name down and wait another hour+(!!!)

Frozen HC, good, a little overrated IMO. If you're with a date/gf/wife they'll love the place. Just make a dinner reservation about 2-4 weeks out and you skip the entire line waiting for dessert. It's the ONLY move, esp. if you're with a lady friend.
