Shoes without Sock

The recent trend of going sockless, I know it's nothing new but I have seen it becoming more popular these past few seasons.
1) When is it appropriate to not where socks with shoes (i.e. what are the limitations to this form of freedom)?
2)Do people who rock this style simply not get sweaty feat?
3) Toll it takes on your shoes?
I would love to get the inside scoop from people who take such liberties and peoples opinions about it.
