Hi, I'm new to this forum and quite frankly I'm new to the whole concept of planning my style so please bear with me.

I already own a pair of khaki chinos and some blue jeans. At the moment I normally just wear some adidas sambas but I would like to look better dressed I suppose and shoes seem a good starting point. I'm thinking about choosing a suede 'derby' type shoe; at least that's what I think they're called...e.g. http://www.topman.com/webapp/wcs/st...Id=207282&categoryId=207288&productId=7900611 however I don't know what colour is good.

Any recommendations other than this type of shoe would be welcome as well.

most here will point you to allen edmonds/aldens. the more classic, the better. those dont fit the bill. basic classic bucks would be better than those. those shoes will be gone in 3-6 months. a pair of better shoes will last 10 times as long, plus be better looking.
give us another option.

Ideally, I would agree with buying quality.

However, one thing to consider is that in someone who is just starting to "upgrade" their look, buying quality may not be needed (or even wanted) early on. For example, what if someone buys a great $300 shoe from Allen Edmonds which will last him the next ten years, but then he realizes that the style is really not something that suits him for the long term? Might be worth it to try some less expensive alternatives which may not have Goodyear welting or leather soles, etc, but still have a classy look. If you find you like it, then get yourself a nice, quality example of it when your first one breaks down.

In this case, OP, I think the silhouette of the shoes is pretty good. The grain looks a bit coarse, and personally I would look into something a bit lighter to go with khakis or jeans - but that's just my personal preference. For the price, though, I don't think it's bad.

I think suede is a great choice.
i think shoes are the starting point to define the rest of the outfit. Bad shoes will ruin your outfit. Smart shoes will help define it. I would go to ebay find something with quality and cheap.
just for you to have an idea look at this:

price might be high for you but you can find similar (other brands) in ebay for good prices.
I would probably go for a mid brown to kind of make it an all season shoe. after that you could buy another suede in a differente model or color so that you can rotate, and let the shoes rest.

I do have some shoes that i use less, with time i understood what was best for my needs. also has you dive more and more in Style Forum you might start to want to improve more.
but my suede are among what i wear the most. The others are good quality not being used so much but i use them from time to time. If you buy something that isn't completely off you won't have much problem. You can always sell them. And being classical and good quality they might get more use over time they won't be out of style.
