Assume the idea of spending five bills on a pair of new dress shoes is off the table and unnegotiable. What is the superior alternative: searching for a used pair of high quality or buying new at a compromised quality? I'd like to keep the spending around $250 and am looking for a brown, streamlined and minimalist oxford with a medallion. What would be a genereal suggestion about my M.O. for a task? Anything I should watch out for when looking at used shoes? Thanks for your help.

If you take your time, use ebay (US and UK), and check B & S regularly, you will find some decent shoes new in that price range (think C&J benchgrade, Alden, Allen Edmonds, Sargent, Martegani) and sometimes evern really nice shoes new for that amount.

If you know where to look, you can find 500-600 shoes for about 250.00

I would not reccomend used shoes (sorry to any used shoe salesman)

Buy new.

Old shoes will be shaped to the original owner's foot and already broken in to fit their feet. It's really not like buying an old sweater or jacket. Not worth it.
