I've seen that some brands make their leather shoes in the UAE now, and I was wondering if that is a good sign or not. It's obviously impossible to determine a shoe's quality based on the country of origin, but I was mostly wondering if good shoes are made in the UAE, or if everything from there should be avoided on principle.

They state that the shoes are good-year welted, and they do look nice, but if they are of awful quality and/or made by slave labour, then it's obviously best to avoid it. The shoes I'm talking about are in the ~$200 price range.

Wow. Interesting. I lived there for 11 years.

While it's not slave labor, it's highly likely that the work is being performed under circumstances much different from Western standards.
