Hi everyone. need some shoe advice. my wedding is coming up and I was wondering what to get for my wedding shoe. The wedding is going to be "formal", I was gifted an experience at a custom tailor by a client of mine. The suit is midnight navy (looks black in person) and the tailor had recommended black shoes when I asked. Im sure other colors would be fine but going off his suggestion here are some I had in mind. I think color 8 would probably work as well (i think)

I would like to get a shoe that I could potentially wear casually / semi casually as well as to not let 900ish dollars sit in my closet. I dont often have to dress in a suit, tie, formal, etc.

At the moment I am debating between these,

I would like to get the loafers as I do not have a pair of loafers in my shoe rotation, but I am reading in most forums that loafers may be too casual. My fiance seems to think so as well. The full strap seems to be a bit more formal though. And if loafers are a no-go with my suit, I would ultimately prefer the bluchers as it seems like I can dress them down a bit more than oxfords.

If the only choice is the oxfords - im thinking I just go down in budget and get AE park aves to save half the money since I will only ultimately wear them for wedding occassions etc etc.

Long rant - but please let me know what you guys think.

Thank you!

Do the right thing for your 'formal' occasion and get the Oxfords. If you don't think you'll wear them much, I agree not to spend the money on shell. You can get AE or more stylish sub $500 Oxfords and they'll be great. If you really don't care about them lasting forever, I'm sure you could get very nice looking black Oxfords under $200 and nobody would know the difference. Pick whichever model appeals to you and your fiance. Note that for more formal events, the less 'decoration' (broguing, etc.) the better. You might even consider wholecuts, which I think would be great. No derbies or loafers if you want to stay in the formal theme.

Agree with the above, and get the Oxfords. Also, shell is less formal than calf, so the Park Avenues will actually be better. As for Alden vs. AE, I think some youtube videos pretty clearly demonstrated that they are roughly the same construction, quality of materials and QC. If you want to shell out Alden money, I'd go straight to Crockett & Jones and not look back.

I also agree with the ones who suggested the Oxfords. Dress code is formal, and your midnight blue suit is formal as well. If it’s too boring then maybe find a shoe with a quarter brogue. Not too plain, yet not as loud as a wingtip.

By the book, a plain captoe oxford is the most formal, but these days any polished black dress shoe would only be a faux pas to those who really care about this stuff. I'm assuming those in attendance at your wedding don't know any menswear rules let alone demand adherance to them. So I don't consider that the issue -- the issue is that it's tough to pair black dress shoes with a casual outfit, especially oxfords. Black dress shoes are not versatile.

If you don't otherwise find yourself wearing formal outfits often, I would get a pair of black oxfords from Cole Haan or Johnston & Murphy on the cheap as suggested above, which you could reserve as your "formal event" shoes. I would then splurge on a brown pair of loafers/bluchers for dressy casual wear, which will be more versatile and more of a wardrobe workhorse.
