shoe storage in closet

what are the different ideas you guys have for shoe storage, in the closet? I was thinking maybe an inexpensive wood bookshelf, or something a step above the AE cedar shoe racks I have currently. I wonder who makes the wooden shoe display stands you see in department stores like nordstrom and saks? that might be a cool way to have them in the closet, sitting on dressers or something of course. that way, i'd be happy every time i walked into the closet and saw the Lobbs.

Reviving this old thread to add one answer and to brag about my weak but effective DIY skills

Just installed 9 rolling shelves in my closet for my shoes - top 2 shelves have higher headroom for boots

Nifty. Cantilevering is above and beyond.

Other comments.

1. Your shoe:trouser ratio is commendable.

2. The upended old shoe rack looks so forlorn. Can't you give it to another New Yorker in need...mafoofan, maybe?

3. Wire hangers? You are surely going to hell.

4. OTH, your Vass might spare your fate.

1. Thanks but I wish I could keep my trousers inventory to this controlled number. I use the upper part of the closet for "out of season" storage - so all my lighter pants are up there. I don't do such thing for shoes

2. I know - I need to chuck it but left it in there while I get one of the removed rods cut to the right length and place it under the trouser rod

3. I know it's heresy but I'm happier with the wire hangers with the sticky tubes when it comes to trousers. They're very space-efficient and do not have the disadvantages of using wire hangers for shirts or (god forbid) jackets

4. Does St Peter wear Vass?

No, Scheer, but Vass is as close as you are likely to get.
