This morning the (new) shoe shine guy in the Hancock used a shoe cream and a hairdryer on my brown C&J cordovans - this after he asked me if i wanted to use black polish... after I requested brown... saying black would look better...

Is it me or is this guy to be avoided?

i dont know , sounds like to me he (new guy) wants to be some sort of a novelty act,
just plain old cream and wax and a little water and a rag and buffing is the time tested true method. a little variation between everybody here but that is the gist.

cream quickly dried on by a blowdrier, is just that , quickly dried cream. and a cream that is acrylic based will dry like paint which can only be removed by stripping.

the black wax is fine, if you want them a bit darker.

I used to use castor oil to obtain an incredible shine on my black Loakes. Then the government realised the terrorists could blow things up with enough of it, and banned its sale. The swine!

I always knew Blair was anti-children.
